Audio Repair Service | Rescuing recordings you cannot make out

Recordings from interviews, talks, podcasts and online courses: as long as the original signal is still there, most noise problems can be improved noticeably — without re-recording.

Recording problems are usually not a matter of broken equipment; it is that the room and the settings at the time were recorded along with everything else. The low hum of air conditioning, computer fans, clipping caused by too much microphone gain, the “bathroom sound” of a reflective room — all of these mask the voice and make the content hard to listen to.

The good news: as long as the voice signal itself is still present, most of this interference can be separated out and suppressed. BoFrame offers audio repair covering noise reduction, declipping, dereverberation and overall sound quality.

What we can handle

  • Continuous background noise: air conditioning, dehumidifiers, computer fans, traffic outside, mains hum (60Hz hum)
  • Clipping and distortion: distortion from recording gain set too high, plosives from a speaker too close to the microphone (P and B sounds)
  • Wind noise: the rumble of wind on outdoor shoots, or when recording straight into a phone
  • Excessive room reverb: the echo of recording in an empty meeting room, a stairwell, or a bathroom-like space
  • Volume jumping up and down: large level differences between speakers, or a source moving nearer and further from the mic
  • Sound that is generally muffled or harsh: an unbalanced frequency response that is uncomfortable to listen to
  • Voice separation: isolating a voice from background music, or the reverse — bringing the voice down

What repair can and cannot do

We think being clear about the limits is more useful than promising that everything can be fixed:

  • What we can do: make content that was unintelligible understandable — usable for subtitling and for publishing. In most cases, the clarity of the voice can be improved noticeably.
  • What we cannot do: turn a recording made on a phone from across the room into studio-quality sound. Repair means “recovering information that has been buried”, not “creating information that was never there”.
  • What is close to impossible: passages entirely buried in noise, where the voice signal itself has already gone; or files that have already been compressed to a very low bit rate.

Because every recording is so different, we will not quote before we have heard the file. Send it to us first; once we have listened, we will tell you how much improvement is realistic, and you can then decide whether to go ahead.

Common situations we are asked about

  • Interview or oral-history recordings that need to become transcripts or documentary material
  • Online courses and recorded talks where poor sound puts viewers off watching
  • A podcast episode with one badly recorded section, where re-recording would cost too much
  • Meeting recordings that need to be kept, but the air conditioning was too loud on the day
  • Precious recordings from weddings and family gatherings — one chance only, with no way to do them again

Formats we support

We can work with all the common audio formats, including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC and AIFF, as well as audio taken straight from video files (MP4, MOV). We can deliver in whichever format you need; if the original was a video, we can also put the repaired audio back into it.

How to send us your files

Put the files on Google Drive and share the folder with us — we can only tell what is possible once we have looked at them. Assessment is free.

1

Create a folder

ComputerIn Drive: “New” → Folder, then drag your files in

PhoneDrive app: “+” → Folder → Upload

2

Turn on sharing

ComputerRight-click the folder → “Share” → “Anyone with the link”

PhoneHold the folder → “⋮” → Manage access → “Anyone with the link”

3

Send us the link

ComputerClick “Copy link”, paste it into an email or LINE

PhoneTap “Copy link”, paste it into LINE

Tell us what is wrong

One line is enough: will not open, noisy, volume jumps around…

Knowing the symptom lets us give you a more accurate assessment

The repair process

Every file is damaged differently, so the process starts with looking at it — not with a price.

Send the files

Upload the original files to Google Drive and share the folder link with us. Please send files that have not been through any other software — repair works best that way.

A real assessment

We open the file and actually listen to it and watch it, work out what caused the damage, and how far it can be improved. Every file is different, and this step cannot be guessed at from experience. The assessment stage is free.

Report and quote

We tell you what we found and how much improvement you can expect, and send a quote for you to decide on. If we judge that it cannot be handled, we will say so directly rather than take the job on regardless.

Payment, then work begins

We start work once the quote is agreed and payment is complete. When it is finished we deliver the files through Google Drive, along with a before-and-after comparison for you to check.

Frequently asked questions

How long does audio repair take?

It depends on the length of the file and how complicated the damage is. A recording under an hour is usually finished within a few working days; longer files, or files that have to be treated section by section, come with a separate timeline. You are welcome to raise urgent work, and we will see whether we can fit it in.

What files do I need to provide?

Please send the original file, not processed by any other software. If you have already run noise reduction on it or compressed it yourself, some information is permanently lost and there is less room to work with. If the original is inside a video, just send us the video file.

How good can the sound get after repair?

That depends on the quality of the original recording. Our aim is for the content to be clearly audible and usable in public, not to promise studio quality. Once we have assessed it, we will tell you specifically how much improvement to expect.

What if you decide it cannot be fixed?

We will tell you directly that we cannot handle it, and explain why. There is no charge in that case, and we will not take the job on regardless.

The file is very large — how do I send it?

Please upload it to Google Drive and share the folder link. It is the most reliable way, and it avoids the quality loss that messaging apps cause by compressing files.

Can I use the repaired file commercially?

Yes. Copyright in the repaired file remains yours. We only provide the technical work; we do not keep your content or use it anywhere.

Want us to take a look at a file first?

Upload the original to Google Drive and send us the folder link. We will assess it and tell you how much it can realistically be improved.
